AHDB launches new advice on moving and handling pigs

22nd Sep 2020 / By Alistair Driver

AHDB has launched a new area on its website advising producers on best practice when it comes to moving and handling pigs.

AHDB handlingThe section is designed to help producers understand why pigs behave in certain ways, how they respond to humans and how to handle them effectively. It includes video demonstrations, usefullinks and useful guidance on the essentials of stockmanship, what to consider when moving and handling pigs and facilities, such as flooring, walls and light.

"While this might be something you do on a regular basis already, the videos are well worth a watch to see if you can pick up any handy tips to make life easier and less stressful for both you and your pigs," AHDB said.

It stressed that maintaining high standards of welfare when handling and moving livestock affects performance, carcase quality, profitability and reputation.

NPA policy services officer Lizzie Wilson urged producers to take a look at the new section, which she said brought together useful information and advice on this important subject.

A podcast on the subject featuring NPA chief executive Zoe Davies, Red Tractor and Morrisons is due to be released on September 29.
