COVID-19, ASF, the market - update from a European perspective

6th Jul 2020 / By Rebecca Veale

NPA senior policy adviser Rebecca Veale has written a comprehensive summary for members of the current situation in EU markets.

Rebecca joined the Copa Pigmeat Group meeting on July 1 to discuss COVID-19 and the market in varios Member States, ASF and the new EU Commission farm to Fork Strategy.

"The Coronavirus pandemic continues to be challenging across different Member States both directly and indirectly," she wrote.

"The situation in Germany is affecting many of us with Tonnies being shut. Our German colleagues confirmed that the Tonnies site will remain shut until July 17 at the earliest, which for us has an impact on our market for cull sow carcases.

"Whilst some Member States are seeing some signs of recovery, for others, such as France, more disruption may be on the cards. In the midst of all this, it appears China is really putting pressure on the price for imports – which is definitely one we are keeping a close eye on."
