Higher supplies forecast, but positive signs on demand at home and abroad

Increasing supplies of pigmeat at home and abroad are likely to ensure prices in 2018 remain below the highs of last year.
However, signs that demand might have change ‘turned the corner’ on the domestic market and the UK’s continuing strong export performance are giving cause for some optimism, according to AHDB.
During AHBD’s recent Outlook webinar, market analysts Bethan Wilkins said the UK breeding herd is thought to have increased by around 1% in 2017 on the back of higher producer prices. However, reports suggest investment has been more focused on buildings and equipment than significant expansion of pigs, she added.
