If there's an elephant in the room... he's the one who'll draw attention to it

29th Nov 2017 / By Alistair Driver

There’s been a fair bit of arm-twisting behind the scenes, but Midlands region has its first Producer Group candidate for the January elections.

David OwersIf you ask them at South of the Humber Pig Discussion Group, they’ll say David Owers is the one person prepared to draw attention to the elephant in the room. That’s any elephant. Any room.

Manager of a 700-sow unit in Lincolnshire, he was judged Single Site Producer of the Year at Pig World’s inaugural National Pig Awards in 2014.

“I can fully understand why many producers are reluctant to put their heads above the parapet in our industry and am not putting myself forward as a candidate because I am on any kind of an ego trip,” he declares (pugnaciously) in his election address.

“The small team we have working for us at NPA do a fantastic job in promoting and protecting our interests. They are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and punch well above their weight.

“They deserve and need a strong Producer Group to back them and, when needed, challenge them. Anyone who knows me knows I am passionate and proud of our great industry and I hope you will give me the opportunity to represent you on the Producer Group.”

Postscript: If he’s elected, Producer Group will have to ensure none of its meetings clashes with a Leicester Tigers game.
