Industry to gather for #biteintobritish event in Leeds on Friday

People from across the pig industry will gather for a #biteintobritish event at a Tesco store in Leeds on Friday.

Anyone interested in fighting for the future of the pig industry is invited to come along, Yorkshire pig farmer and co-organiser Vicky Morgan said.

The aim of the event is to deliver an upbeat message about the benefits of British food and farming to Tesco customers, the media and the supply chain.

“This will be a positive promotion for #biteintobritish and we want as many people as possible to come to Leeds to help spread the message,” Vicky said.

“We will be telling our story to encourage consumers to bite into British - with the help of Ladies in Pigs, sausage and bacon sandwiches and a big red real tractor. We firmly believe that getting consumers and the media, of course, on board with our message holds the key to getting retailers like Tesco and the entire supply chain properly backing British farmers.”

The Morgan family have around 3,000 extra pigs on their units, and there is little sign of the situation easing.

“The situation is incredibly tough on pig farms across the country, and it is going to be a difficult start to 2021. So, we really need to act, collectively now – if we don’t, there won’t be a British pig industry, soon,” Vicky added.

Vicky thanked various companies who have supported the campaign so far – Ceva, Agrosoft, PIC, HIPRA and Lallemand, plus Pilgrim’s and Karro, which have provided pork products for this and previous events.

The Leeds event will follow hot on the heels of a Christmas singalong at the Hayton festive Tractor event in East Yorkshire, on December 23, featuring figures from across the industry in a #BiteIntoBritish take on We wish you a Merry Christmas.
