Latest Real Welfare report highlights improvement and good overall standards

27th Jan 2021 / By Alistair Driver

The vast majority of pig farms continue to demonstrate good levels of welfare, with continuous improvements seen across the sector as a whole, the latest report on AHDB's Real Welfare Scheme shows.

More than 13 million pigs over 50kg have been individually assessed by specially trained vets since the unique scheme was introduced in 2013, creating the biggest database of its kind anywhere in the world.

The report summarising the findings from 2018 to 2020, shows that all the welfare outcomes measured, bar one, have shown improvements since 2013.

NPA chief executive Zoe Davies said: "These findings are really encouraging, showing generally high standards of welfare and, in most categories, steady improvement.

"This is the only scheme that records welfare outcomes and it provides demonstrable evidence that, regardless of the system they are raised in, our pig producers are doing a good job."
