NPA chairman to discuss antibiotics on the One Show

4th Jan 2017 / By Alistair Driver

NPA chairman Richard Lister is due to appear on the One Show later this week to discuss the use of antibiotics in pig farming.

Filming took place on Richard’s Yorkshire farm on Tuesday and the four-minute feature is expected to air on BBC1 on Thursday night (January 5).

ListerThe feature is understood to focus heavily on Defra’s desire to set long-term targets for reducing the use of antibiotics across the farming sectors by the end of this year.

An industry task force, led by the RUMA alliance and including NPA, has been established to develop meaningful and workable targets.

Richard sought to use the opportunity to highlight the positive steps being taken across the pig sector to address the issue.

Richard said: “The use of antibiotics in farming is now very much an issue of national interest and this sort of feature, on a popular programme watched by millions, is an opportunity to spell out the positive steps the industry is taking.

“In the meantime, we continue to urge pig farmers to enter antibiotic data onto eMB-Pigs.

"It is absolutely essential we get the data on there as soon as possible so we can negotiate fair and reasonable targets with Government.”
