NPA writes to Eustice over unprecedented challenges facing the industry

26th Jan 2021 / By Alistair Driver

The NPA has written to Defra Secretary George Eustice to bring to his attention the unprecedented challenges the industry is facing.

The letter highlights how the UK's exit from the EU is impacting on the industry's ability to export goods to the continent and Northern Ireland as a result of the additional checks required at ports.

This has coincided with the enormous pressures that the COVID-19 pandemic has already placed on pig producers and processors, including falling prices, reduced slaughter capacity and livestock stuck on farms, to create a perfect storm for the industry.

The NPA has been highlighting the issues facing the industry in the media. The story has been widely picked up, including most recently in an interview with NPA chairman Richard Lister in the Sunday Times.
