Search begins for the champion sausage

It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it. The NPA’s Andrea Vickers was busy tasting sausages last week, as judging for UK Sausage Week got underway.

Andrea sausage weekAndrea joined Ladies in Pigs at Harper Adams University last Wednesday and Thursday for the judging session featuring around 600 sausages supplied by manufacturers from across the country.

The two-day judging takes place under the watchful eye of ‘Sausageologist’ and head judge, Keith Fisher, together with Q Guild manager, Claire Holland and various members of Ladies in Pigs.

There are 14 categories in the competition, organised by Meat Management, including eight regional winners in England, plus categories for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There’s also supermarket, foodservice and own label manufacturers categories, as well as the coveted overall UK Supreme Sausage Champion.

Mr Fisher said: “We have a fantastic range of sausages this year and our judges will be evaluating hundreds of the best bangers in Britain. As always there is great innovation and our team do a brilliant job.”

Andrea said: “It was a very enjoyable experience and great to be working with Ladies in Pigs – but it’s not as easy as it sounds! There were lots of very high quality entries and interesting flavor combinations too. We look forward to finding out who the winners are during Sausage week!"

The winners will be announced at the newly reopened Butchers’ Hall in London to kick start UK Sausage Week on Monday October 28.
