Wayland Farms shortlisted for Antibiotic Guardian Award

9th May 2018 / By Alistair Driver

Antibiotic Guardian

Leading pig business Wayland Farms has been shortlisted for the Antibiotic Guardian Awards.

This year saw a new 'Agriculture and Food' category added to the awards that 'highlight the continuous good work being carried out to support the key aims and goals of Antibiotic Guardian'.

This drew plenty of entries, which have been narrowed down to a shortlist containing a number of familair names, including MSD Animal Health, Tesco, the Co-op, Waitrose and the Bristol Veterinary School, as well as East Anglia-based Wayland, part of the Cranswick PLC.

At a meeting in Diss earlier this year, consultant vet Steve Youngs explained how Wayland had adoppted a proactive approach to health management that is benefiting rearing herd performance and minimising medication use.

“The two-site rearing strategy means pigs are only mixed at weaning, which has made a huge difference to health and productivity overall. Using dedicated nurseries to rear piglets on from weaning at four weeks of age until they are 35/40kgs has also helped us to stabilise health status and build immunity. Mortality rates are lower and we’ve seen notable improvements in daily growth, feed efficiency and performance overall,” he said.

The food and farming sector was represented in other categories, too. For example, the Responsible Use of Medicine in Agriculture (RUMA) alliance is shortlisted in the Community Communications and the Prescribing and Stewardship categories.
