It is illegal to confine pregnant pigs in "stalls", for most of their adult lives, but most countries on the continent are in breach of this European Union Welfare Directive. British food suppliers have a duty of care to ensure their meat products do not come from these illegal, low-welfare farms.
'We, the undersigned, pledge that all the pork products we use or sell are sourced from farms that are compliant with Council Directive 2008/120/EC laying down minimum standards for the protection of pigs. We are completely confident that our sourcing policy is robust enough to ensure that all of the pork we use has come from legal farms'
