Defra confirms re-appointment of FAWC
23rd Jan 2017 / By Alistair Driver
The NPA has welcomed an announcement by that nine members of the Farm Animal Welfare Committee (FAWC) have been re-appointed.
There were concerns about the future of the committee, which is chaired by Peter Jinman and has, over the years, published balanced reports on various aspects of farm animal welfare.
Its roles include advising Defra and the devolved administrations on farm animal welfare and any relevant legislative changes and providing independent scientific support and advice on the protection of animals at the time of killing.
Confirming the extensions, Defra’s Animal Welfare Minister, Lord Gardiner, said:
"The Government shares the public’s high regard for animal welfare and I am proud that the UK has some of the highest welfare standards in the world.
"The Farm Animal Welfare Committee provides invaluable expertise to support Government policy in England, Scotland and Wales. I am delighted to be able to confirm these re-appointments."
NPA chief executive Zoe Davies: "This is good news. We are pleased that FAWC will continue in its valuable role of providing independent advice on the important issue of farm animal welfare."
