Strategic Farm application deadline this week

12th Feb 2018 / By Alistair Driver

Pig producers wishing to put themselves forward for AHDB's Strategic Farm programme need to get their applications in this week.

Following the success of Lancashire producer David Goodier (pictured), who has achieved two extra pigs per sow since becoming a host Startegic Farm in 2016, AHDB is now looking for four more producers to sign up to the scheme.

To apply, download and complete the application form and return it to  by the deadline of Wednesday February 14.

AHDB said the scheme would give producers the chance to make positive changes on their units, with support from AHDB and industry peers.

The new Strategic Farm hosts will focus on water quality and delivery and practical farm hygiene. In addition, they will be able to choose two further areas to look at which are specific to their business

Mr Goodier said he saw a unique opportunity to learn and improve his 230-sow unit through taking part in the initiative. He said: “I’ve benefited from the pooling of ideas from other producers and industry advisers, with plenty of practical suggestions on what I could change to help improve pig performance.”

Hosting regular meetings to discuss how the farms are operating and addressing key challenges, AHDB said Strategic Farms use farmer-to-farmer learning to accelerate the uptake of knowledge and provide a platform for farmers to explore the potential for best practice to have an impact on their business.
