Environment Agency publishes documents to support permit reviews

22nd Feb 2021 / By Alistair Driver

The Environment Agency has published information to support the current Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) permit reviews for the pigs and poultry sectors.

The agency has made an example pig permit available on their website as well as a generic decision document for the production pigs and weaners.

The agency has carried out a review of the Best Available Technique (BAT) Conclusions and  anticipates that plant and techniques in use at existing permitted sites are for the most part compliant with the new conclusions. There are some new standards and requirements operators will need to comply with however.

Existing permits will need to be varied to incorporate these new requirements and will be checked during compliance.

The agency said it has developed a streamlined approach to help minimise the cost to permit holders and ensure all permits are updated in a timely way. The cost of the variation for all permit holders will be £380.

It has issued a letter with information on the permit review process to the registered office of all sites and is now in the process of sending a draft variation notice to check for each site that it has identified as requiring a permit review under this BRef.
