Farrowing crates - how you can help

2nd Sep 2019 / By Rebecca Veale

A debate is taking place on 9 September 2019 on the ‘end the cage age’ petition that has been circulated by Green NGOs and we are asking members to contact their MP to ensure they have the facts ahead of the debate.

Part of this campaign is calling for Defra to ban the use of farrowing crates and the petition has over 100k signatures from the public. A template letter was sent with Piggy Points which can be updated and amended to share the impact such a ban would have on your business. The NPA briefing on Farrowing Crates is a good document which explains in more detail what and why we use farrowing crates, this is something you may want to include with your letter or email.

How you can help…

  1. Use the template letter and amend it where necessary for your business or circumstances.

  2. Send the letter (attaching the NPA briefing) to your MP – if you are unsure who your MP is or how to contact them, you can find their details by putting in your postcode here.

  3. Keep the NPA posted if you hear back from your MP.

The NPA has highlighted why farrowing crates are so important and will continue to do so as the debate approaches, but we need as many members to rally to this as possible – a future ban could be a real possibility, especially with the current Defra Ministerial team in place.

We are fully supportive of those who wish to move in this direction and continue to look for Government financial support to allow it, but do not believe that a ban is the right way forward.
