Global pig production forecast to grow in 2018

26th Oct 2017 / By Alistair Driver

Global pork production will rise by almost 2% on the year to 113.1 million tonnes in 2018, according to the latest USDA forecasts.

Expansion in China is anticipated to be the driving force behind the increase, with pork production expected to rise 2% to nearly 55 million tonnes in 2018. China alone is forecast to account for 61% of the overall growth, to make up 48% of total global output.

As a result, China’s pork imports are likely to decline for the second consecutive year, as domestic production fulfils a higher proportion of demand. Nonetheless, China is expected to remain the top global importer of pork.

Following increases in 2017, US production is forecast to grow 4% in 2018, to 12 million tonnes.
