Pig farmers urged to take part in Open Farm Sunday

6th Apr 2017 / By Alistair Driver

Pig farmers are being urged to put their names forward for Open Farm Sunday, the annual event that attracts thousands of people onto farms across the country every summer.

OFSOrganised, as ever, by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), this year’s event takes place on June 11.

LEAF said it provided the ideal platform to showcase the great work farmers do in ‘providing nutritious food to managing the environment’.

“The need for farmers to get public support for the vital work they do has never been more critical,” it said.

"Join hundreds of farmers across Britain and take part in the farming industry’s annual open day on Sunday June 11.

“Explain to visitors the work that you do and how it impacts on our lives. Visitors are keen to learn about everyday farming tasks and are amazed to see the skills, technology and science behind modern farming. Even in remote rural areas you will be amazed how many people don’t fully understand the vital work farmers do.”

NPA vice chairman Richard Longthorp urged pig farmers to get involved to help address some of the misconceptions about what they do.

“We are always under a great deal scrutiny but we are a very proud industry and this is a great opportunity to tell the public the real story about what happens on our farms. It is about showcasing all the good things we do, the high standards we keep and the pride and passion with which we go about our everyday lives.”

How to take part

Events can range from a private farm walk for neighbours, through to a full open day. The size and format of each event is up to the individual, LEAF stressed in its pre-event publicity.

There are plenty of free resources and support available, including a Host Farmer Handbook, OFS Bitesize webinars and a private Facebook group.
